Teenage boy birthday cakes can be problematic! Gone are the days of spaceships, dinosaurs, dragons. Our nephews are now sadly all too grown up for that. This weekend was Devan's 12th birthday and he and his sisters were performing at a dance show in their home town. Using this as some vague inspiration, I had some photos taken of Devan in his dance costume (Wildcats from High School Musical) and used this to decorate the cake. Surrounded with lots and lots of brightly coloured sweets (all my favourites!), this was such an easy cake to make and it was loved just as much as any of the other more elaborate cakes! Happy Birthday Devan!

Hi Hannah, that looks a gorgeous cake! One of my favourites for teenage boys that always goes down well is a Chocaholic Cake - a huge choc cake, then I pile all sorts of (unwrapped) chocolate bars....single Twix fingers, Maltesers, full size Mars etc....into an artfully arranged pyramid on top of the chocolate frosting and finish with some chocolate ganache drizzled over (which also acts as the glue to keep it all in place) and a sprinkle of gold glitter. Candles can easily be pushed in once it's set. Watch their eyes! Great great blog - I always visit yours first! x

What a lovely cake Hannah. Great idea Rachel! I recently made a cake covered with maltesers and chocolate buttons for a 10 year old. It was fun to watch his face.
